Maytag Washer Showing an Error Code? Start Here

Codes differ between Maytag model generations, so the manual for your exact model is the final word. These are the ones we see most often, and what they usually mean before anyone opens the machine.

Before you call

  1. Write the code down exactly
F5 E2 and F5 are not the same fault, and the difference decides which part gets tested. Photograph the panel if the code clears quickly.
  2. Try a power reset first
Unplug the machine or trip its breaker for a full minute, then restore power. A genuine one-off glitch clears here. A real fault comes straight back.
  3. A suds code usually means detergent, not a failure
Sud or Sd means the machine detected excess suds and paused to clear them. It is almost always too much detergent, or standard detergent in an HE machine. Run a rinse-and-spin and cut the dose.
  4. A long-fill code points upstream of the washer
LF or a similar fill code means water isn't arriving fast enough. Check that both supply valves are fully open and the inlet screens at the back of the machine aren't clogged before assuming the valve failed.
  5. A lid or door lock code blocks everything else
A lock fault stops filling and spinning, so it can look like several problems at once. If the lid or door doesn't click shut, start there.

When it's time to call a technician

If the code returns immediately after a power reset, or it points to the motor, the control board, or the door lock, it needs testing rather than guessing — those are the parts most often replaced unnecessarily. Have your model number ready when you call; on Maytag machines it decides which code table applies.
